Marathon training season has slowly crept up on us. If you’ve been braving the elements in the hope of reaching the magic 26.2 at your looming marathon, then we have some training essentials that you don’t want to forget!

1) Make sure that you train in the kit you plan on wearing on race day. You don’t have to wear it months in advance, but a couple of practice runs definitely won’t hurt! There’s nothing worse than sporting a brand new kit and a few miles in you’re uncomfortable.

2) Think about your hydration strategy. Drinking too much throughout your marathon could lead to a stitch mid-race which could have a massive impact on your time. Drinking energy drinks that are laden with sugar can also lead to stomach cramps. Remember hydration isn’t just about water, and you will need to replace electrolytes too! Take sachets of Totum Sport with you for mid-race to keep you going, but don’t forget to take one before you run. Totum Sport helps your cells hold onto water so you won’t need to take on as much which will help avoid the need to find a bathroom at mile 17!

3) Invest in a good pair of headphones and find a playlist that motivates you and keeps you going. 26.2 miles is a long way, and having something in your ear to spur you on and get you closer to that finish line is always a bonus. Running a marathon is as much about the mental battle as it is the physical battle, so find your motivation and run with it (literally!)

4) Recover properly. It’s likely that all you’re thinking about is getting to that finish line. But you need to think about what you’re going to do AFTER the finish line. Replenishing lost electrolytes is vital to improve your recovery, so make sure you have a sachet of Totum Sport to hand for after your race. Recovering properly between training runs also means that you can get out there again faster without that heavy feeling in your legs.

5) Support your training with good nutrition. Fuelling your body with nutrients that will give you energy is key. Training runs are the perfect time to figure out exactly what you should be eating on race day. Our nutritionist is always on hand to answer any nutrition questions you have!
